Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in January 19th 1809. His mother died when he was two and he was soon adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Allan; after being adopted his new family moved to England for 5 years. They then moved back to America where later Poe would attend the University of Virginia. A year following Poe's start at the university he had to drop out due to his heavily drinking and financial problems. Poe also was a member of the army and was a sergeant major. After being released from the army Poe started to write. He submitted many of his early poems to magazines but they were sadly rejected. Shortly after being rejected by many magazine places he soon got a job as a editor at a local newspaper in New York. After being in New York for several years he decided to move to Richmond. Where he married his cousin Virginia, he was 27 she was only 13. After many years Poe's writing were finally being published. Even though he was being published  his money faded fast has was his wife’s health. They moved to a cottage outside of Richmond where Virginia died, she died in 1847 ten days after Poe's birthday. Poe's health started to decline shortly after and he passed away October 7th 1849. Although is a collapsed overview of Poe's life it gives the general feel for how his life progressed. Although Edgar Allan Poe's life was rough and he didn't always achieve what he had planned, his literary work has affect the world more than he ever thought it would. The literary world would not be the same with some of Poe's amazing works of literature. Poe's writings romance and dark

Most of Edgar Allan Poe's literature is viewed as being dark and twisted in many ways. Some have even said that towards the end of Poe's life they believed he had started to lose his mind. But what many people don’t take into perspective is the fact that some of Poe's literature can be seen as a romance while still being dark and dreary. Poe can be seen as a Romanic but dreary writer. Annabel Lee is a love story fallen short. As Annabel dies the dreariness falls upon the narrator who just lost the only women he had ever loved. This critic agrees with this idea. The source states, “On the surface, Poe’s "Annabel Lee" appears to be a tale of romantic love and deep loss of love to death, coupled with a conquering of death by that same love" This can be seen in lines 30 through 33. "Neither the angels in heaven above,/ Nor the demons down under the sea,/ Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/ Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE"

This story is conveyed as a tragic romance. The love of two people was so strong that even death could not separate them. No matter where he went or how he looked around him he seen Annabel Lee. She was the love of his life and without her I personally think he was lost and could only find comfort in seeing her in the stars and in the wind.

Criticism of Annabel Lee

Annabel Lee is in fact a love story, but many make the argument that, to Edgar Allan Poe it was more than just your typical love story. Many of Poe's writings were dark and dreary. Annabel Lee opens Poe's form of writing. Edgar Allan Poe defines beauty and nature in the writing. He shows the beauty of the sea and also the beauty of Annabel. This source states, "This poem is one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most popular writing on the basis that Annabel is pure love and beauty." Annabel is also the main factor of the story. She ties the story together. As in the story you can see. ""That a maiden there lived whom you may know by the name of Annabel Lee; and this maiden she lived with no other thought than to love and be loved by me" (line 5) This line not only shows the importance of Annabel but also the symbol of love that is the main component  in this story.

Another critic argues that all of Poe's stories are the same and this one is no different. Although Poe does write some dark and dreary stories this one could be seen a little different, but this critic believes this story fits right into his profile. He argues,

“The recurring theme in most of his work is the tragic separation of lovers through death. His plots, though short, usually give insight into the deteriorating psyche of the lover left behind to suffer alone. Annabel Lee is one such poem that describes the passion and devotion of one man for his dead wife."

The first critic said this story was different from Poe's normal writings and was a change from his dark ways of literature. But this critic discusses why this poem is no different from any other stories that Poe wrote in the 19th Century. Both critics have good points on this story, but regardless this story has become famous for being a sad and heart wrenching love story.

The focus of Annabel Lee

Annabel Lee written by Edgar Allan Poe is a sad love story. Annabel Lee is in love with the narrator in a kingdom by the sea. Although they were just children they knew their love was strong and could never be broken. As the angels above and demons below seen the love between Annabel and the narrator they became jealous and envious of their love. Soon after they seen the love between them, they sent a wind that made Annabel sick and which lead to her death. Although Annabel was gone, the narrator continued to see and hear Annabel everywhere. There love was to true to be defeated.
